Adults with ASD can (and do) make great employees. One job website promoting the employment of people with ASD highlighted some of the general strengths you may find: • High levels of concentration and focus • Reliability and dependability • Attention to detail and accuracy • Technical abilities, such as coding and programming • Factual knowledge and excellent memory Bearing this in mind - you’d think most people on the spectrum would have a job right? No siree bob! Far from it sadly. A UK survey found only 15% of adults with autism to be working full time. Put another way – 85% of adults with ASD are not in full time work. Why – when they’ve clearly got so much to give? Lots of reasons. Here’s a few: * Finding job openings – Where to look. How to look. Who to ask. * Applying – How to complete an application. How to ‘sell’ your skills on paper. * Interviews - Eye contact. Handshakes. Being put on the spot. All manner of social interactions. * At work – Navigating the ‘water cooler’ culture. Understanding their role. Working with others. Many other issues too, which mean people with ASD often don’t maximize their work potential. It’s a truly sad state of affairs. However, luckily, it's not all doom and gloom. If your teen or adult with Asperger’s is struggling to find work, we can help . . .
